The staff in the department of chemistry education attends to questions concerning the development of interests and competences of learners in
schools and beyond.
The transition from school to institutions of higher education has been opened as a new focus in research and development, linking the perspectives
of research and practice
as in earlier projects.
Embedded in the research areas at the IPN, the projects of the department aim at various levels of the education system:
The project „modelling competences“ (MHC-C) lays the ground for the development and analysis of teaching units and test tasks. It links research
and practice with a focus on
diagnosis and development of competences.
In the projects NaWi-5/6, NaWi-Kontext (upper secondary level) und NaWi-aktiv (in support of socially disadvantaged children), possibilities of
advancement of a basic
understanding of science and its nature are studied in close cooperation with teachers. The detection and encouragement of talent are part of this
work as well.
The transition from school to university (chem-learning@university) will become a new core issue for the department, studying prerequisites of
and effects for learners
and (prospective) teachers.
Reaching beyond classrooms, since recently means of fostering talents are researched. On the one hand, the networking of schools among each other and
with non-school
institutions will be studied and promoted in a systemic way. The effects will be analyzed on students (Forschungsexpress), on teaching procedures
and on teacher education (ESTABLISH).
On the other hand national and international contests will become the realm of research more than in the past, e.g. for the characterization of
talents or the support of facilitating institutions.
