The mathematics requirements of first-year students: Lecture and panel discussion at the Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultätentag in Göttingen, June 9th, 2017

Why do the requirements in mathematics pose such a big problem for first-year students of mathematics and science? What can schools and universities do to improve the situation?

Prof. Aiso Heinze, head of the IPN’s Department of Mathematics Education, will open the Faculty Day with a lecture about university teachers’ expectations of first-year students’ skills in mathematics. This will be followed by a panel discussion with:

  • Prof. Wolfram Koepf (Chairman Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung, spokesperson of the Mathematik Kommission Übergang Schule-Hochschule)
  • Dr. Philipp Schaumann (Lower-Saxoy Ministry of Sciences and Culture)
  • Ministerialrätin Gudrun Köppen-Castrop (Lower-Saxoy Ministry of Education)
  • Dr. Ekkehard Winter (Executive Director of the Deutsche Telekom Stiftung)
