The German Team for the International Biology Olympiad in Tehran Has Been Confirmed

LTR: Bruno Ederer, Paul Bunk, Kieran Didi, Hendrik Michel

The four best young talents in biology in Germany were selected last week at the IPN in Kiel. Twelve students from eight German states came to the IPN from May 27th - June 1st, 2018. Among more than 1500 competition participants, the young people had prevailed in three rounds of competition and qualified for the last federal round of the selection competition for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).

After an intense week with extensive theoretical and practical exams and seminars on botany, zoology, biochemistry, molecular biology and ecology, it was decided who the four best were:

Bruno Ederer (17) - Carl-Zeiss-Gymnasium in Jena (Thüringen)
Kieran Didi (17) - Erzbischöflichen St. Joseph-Gymnasium Euskirchen (North Rhein-Westphalia)
Paul Bunk (17) - Gymnasium Penzberg (Bavaria)
Hendrik Michel (18) - Otto-Kühne-Schule in Bonn (North Rhein-Westphalia)

These four students now form the national team that will represent Germany in the international competition. The four Olympians will first attend an intensive preparatory seminar in Switzerland and then head to the International Biology Olympiad in July. This year's International Biology Olympiad will be held from July 15th – July 22nd, 2018 in Tehran, Iran. There, the young people compete against 60 other nations for gold, silver and bronze medals.

Each year the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is held in another country. In Germany, the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) in Kiel is conducting the selection rounds in cooperation with the Länder Ministries of Culture. The selection procedure is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
