Biology Education

Research in the Department of Biology Education at the IPN focuses on fundamental questions of teaching and learning biology across the lifespan and on questions that arise in educational contexts when new knowledge in biology is applied.

Empirical and conceptual research of the department is dedicated to questions of the development and fostering of competencies in the field of biology from the elementary level to the end of upper secondary school and within the context of extracurricular educational offers. Studies are conducted on the transfer of current knowledge in the field of biology and the department also focuses on research on biology teacher education.

The Biology Education Department at the IPN is responsible for the International Biology Olympiad, the National Environment Competition (BUW) and the European Olympiad of Experimental Science. It also offers events for school classes and teachers on current topics in the life sciences at the life:lab of the Kiel Science Outreach Lab.
