EVAaBiol - Evolution: understanding and acceptance of preservice biology teachers


In order to foster preservice biology teachers' acceptance of evolutionary theory it is essential to know about the factors which influence the acceptance. Similarly, it is important to know about these factors when looking at the teachers' preference for teaching evolutionary theory.

The influence of cognitive (e.g. understanding of evolution), affective (e.g. attitude towards religion), and contextual factors (e.g. parents' educational qualification) on the acceptance of evolutionary theory and the preference for its teaching are being investigated in a collaboration with the University of Münster. For this purpose a total of 180 German preservice biology teachers have been surveyed in the KiL (Measuring the professional knowledge of preservice mathematics and science teachers) project with respect to their relevant cognitive, affective and contextual characteristics.
