Open Access at IPN

Open access refers to the unlimited and free access to quality-tested scientific information on the internet. Due to the lifting of technical, financial and legal barriers, open access contributes to accelerating scientific innovation processes and improving the visibility of research findings. Scientists are therefore supported in their research and publication processes, and the use of public funded research is maximized. As a member of the Leibniz Association, the Leibniz-Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) is committed to open access. As a result of the mandate bestowed upon it, to develop and promote pedagogics in the sciences and mathematics through research as well as carrying out basic research in the areas of teaching and learning, the IPN has a special interest in making its findings accessible to a wider readership and has therefore ratified an open access policy.

Ms Jobmann has been authorized with the realization of open access at IPN.

Gold/hybrid open access

In order to support IPN scientists with open access publication, the IPN set up a publication fund on 01.01.2016. This serves the purpose of taking over the incurring publication costs for the scientists (Article Processing Charges – APC). The fund is provided from the budget resources and will be evaluated after three years.

The following funding possibilities for an open access publication are available to scientists:

  1. Applicants for publication funds in the context of a project application by BMBF and EU -> FP7 projects are requested to check if there are sufficient funds in their project funds for an open access publication. If required applicants are asked to acquire sufficient funding from the FP7 post-grant open access publishing fund.
  2. For a Gold open access publication you can apply for funds from the Leibniz Publication Fund (max. 2000€ pro contribution, inkl. taxes)
  3. IPN funding (max. 2000€ pro contribution, inkl. taxes)

A condition of receiving funding from point 2 or 3 is that IPN scientists are either a corresponding or submitting author. When submitting your paper, always state your IPN affiliation.

In the initiation phase of the publication fund at IPN, hybrid publications will also be financed. This practice will be reviewed when the evaluation takes place.

Researcher at the IPN has published yet in the following open access Journals (you can find more in the Directory of Open Access Journals):

SpringerOpen prepay Membership

If you submit a contribution to SpringerOpen or BioMed Central, then state “Payment” in the payment area so that an institutional payment can be applied for. Also mention IPN as name of institution. You will then receive 20% rebate on the APC (Article Processing Charges). Submission has to take place within the IPN area of the institute, so that you will automatically be recognized as affiliated and you have to submit the article as “corresponding author”.

Further information can be found in the flyer and on the homepage of the ZB Med

The following journals from SpringerOpen are qualified for open acess publishing (full list: www.springeropen.com/journals)

Green Open-access

The library will support a second publication of a contribution to a journal (cf. secondary publication rights). To do so, it is necessary to give the final peer reviewed manuscript a new cover sheet and a creative commons licence (CC licence selection) and to upload it in PURE or to send it to She will take care of all further steps and contact the author if need be. The second publication normally takes place in pedocs (FIS Education).

Glossary

Green open-access: The Green Way is the parallel publication, self-archiving or secondary publication which can occur on homepages, institute homepages or in document servers (e.g. pedocs). Authors save a copy of their paper or monography which they have submitted to a publisher and make it available to the public on one of the named infrastructure elements.

Gold Open-access: The primary publication of scientific texts in an open access medium which adheres to the open access conditions is known as the Golden Way. However, this mainly has to do with open access journals that employ a peer reviewed procedure, just like conventional journals. These journals are listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals. With the help of thinkchecksubmit you can check if the selected journal has been checked for quality.

Hybrides Open access: hybrids publishing denotes a type of publication by which the journal article comes out as an open access publication in a closed-access journal, resp. by which a fee required printed version is published in addition to the open access version which is available online. This model is mostly used for monographs.

Further Information

Open-access.net:  In open-access.net you will find information on the key terms and forms of open access, e.g. on open access journals and repositories, the beginnings of the open access movement, business models and legal issues. The information platform offers the possibility of a thematic, a discipline-specific and a target group oriented (e.g. author or founder of a journal) access around the topic open access.
