Germany's student team won two bronze and two silver medals at the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), which was hosted in Paris this year.

More than 300 students met in Paris from July 21st to July 30th, 2019 and took part in two five-hour exams in the theory and practice of chemistry.

For this international competition Germany was represented by:

Paul Beurich (Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium in Riesa, bronze medal)

Julius Dommack (Grammar School Nieder-Olm, bronze medal)

Arina Schober (Grammar school Donauwörth, silver medal)

Sebastian Witte (Bismarck grammar school in Genthin, silver medal)

These four won the German selection procedure over four rounds against 1466 students from the Federal Republic of Germany.

A special highlight of this year's competition was that the practical retreat took place in the Lycée Pierre Gilles de Gennes. Most of the city's sights are visible from there. The participants visited a few of them during the course of the leisure program of the International Chemistry Olympiad, such as Versaille Castle and the Cité des sciences et de l'industrie.

The practical assignments focused on the use of renewable resources and the analysis of wine components. The theory exam covered tasks ranging from fuel cells, silver chloride and nanomachines to large organic molecules such as polymers and catenanes.

The luggage for the return trip not only contains the medals won, exciting experiences and cultural impressions from Paris, but also lots of new acquaintances with students who are enthusiastic about chemistry from all over the world.

Sonja Hanebaum, IPN (Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education), the former IChO participant Robert Hein (University of Oxford) and Dr. Uta Purgahn (Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium Erfurt), the State Commissioner for Thuringia, accompanied the team.

Next year's IChO will take place in Istanbul (Turkey) from July 5th to July 14th, 2020.
