Is good mathematics instruction a question of cultural perspective?

A German-Taiwanese team investigates the teaching perceptions of teachers in both countries

A week-long working meeting took place in Taipei in April as part of the binational DFG project TaiGer Noticing, which is based at the IPN Kiel, the PH Freiburg and the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei (Taiwan). The work focuses on the development of an intercultural comparative research approach to make the influence of cultural norms on the quality of teaching visible.

Here the approach is the question of how mathematics teachers and experts in mathematics education in both countries perceive the quality of mathematics teaching. The influence of culturally influenced ideas of "good teaching" will be investigated by comparing the different perceptions using teaching vignettes. The results should help to ensure that research findings on teaching quality and the associated professional skills of teachers from different cultures can be meaningfully related to one another.

Anke Lindmeier from the Department of Mathematics Education at the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) and Anika Dreher from the Freiburg University of Education (former post-doctoral student at the IPN) were interviewed by Radio Taiwan International's German-language program about the goals, background and challenges of this binational project.

TaiGer Noticing is a sub-project of the Taiwanese-German research project on socio-cultural influences on mathematics teaching (TaiGer), which was established in 2016 and is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Taiwanese Ministry of Science and Technology.
