Junior Researcher Days of the International JuniorScience Olympiad

June 7th, 2019

This year's Junior Researcher Days recently took place at the University of Mainz: a great experience for the younger members of the International JuniorScience Olympiad. Participants between the ages of 9 and 12 who were particularly successful at the International JuniorScience Olympiad (IJSO) were invited to experiment in the NaT lab at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

At the Junior Researcher Days, which take place annually in May/June, 20 particularly successful IJSO participants under the age of 13 have the opportunity to explore scientific phenomena focusing on "The Colorful World of Colors". Among other things, dyes are extracted from plants, the dye indigo - to which we owe the blue jeans - is chemically synthesized and the latter is even used for dyeing.

Participants not only gain scientific knowledge and experience in a real laboratory, but they can also meet peers from all over Germany with similar interests. Board games, crafts and leisure activities in the park provide a pleasant balance to the work in the laboratory. A special recreation highlight this year was a visit to the ZDF television studio.
