Resarch area 1:
Aims and models of mathematics and science education

This research aims to develop both subject-specific and interdisciplinary models of competency structures as well as competency development in mathematics and science. Competency models for the operationalisation of educational standards for the intermediate school leaving certificate in mathematics and science have already been identified and empirically investigated. These results must now be analyzed and the models further developed for specific subjects; this includes the development of competency models for related educational stages and a description of how students' competencies are developed on the basis of the existent model. Furthermore, the research area examines the question of interdisciplinary competencies. Up until now, competency models have generally been formulated specified by subject. However, in the context of mathematics and science education, one can assume that the promotion of individual competencies is relevant for several subjects or that individual subjects contribute to the promotion of certain competencies. Projects which model and study these types of interdisciplinary competences are summarized in Research Area 1.2
