For years now, the international biology, chemistry and physics Olympiads (IBO, IChO, IPhO) for students have been organised at the IPN, as has the BundesUmweltWettbewerb (BUW) (Nationwide Environmental Competition). These competitions can be seen as instruments for promoting interest and talents and they thereby serve an important function in the German educational landscape. Firstly, in order to form a basis for the research-based development of supportive measures, this research area examines questions on how to characterise scientific talents. Secondly, in order to form a base which ensures the effectiveness of competitions, it investigates questions on how to characterise system parameters.
