Students’ and prospective students’ basic computer related and information related knowledge

Digital teaching and learning is an integral part of university teaching and is becoming increasingly important. The use of digital teaching formats in everyday university life (e.g. enriching teaching with digital teaching formats such as digital scripts) is accompanied by a more active and self-directed acquisition of knowledge content for students in collaborative working groups than before. For a long time it was assumed that students have the necessary basic computer and information-related skills (CIB). However, this assumption is contrary to empirical findings, which point to insufficient CIB for the implementation of students' professional, social and personal goals. While only small subpopulations have sufficient CIBs, the vast majority of students use digital media to a very limited extent and mostly for personal entertainment, private information search and social exchange. In addition, some of the students and prospective students report motivational deficits in the use of digital media, which are accompanied by comparatively low CIB and a low willingness to improve.

The primary objective of the CiBaS project is to diagnose the CIB of current students (start cohort 5) and prospective students (start cohort 4) on the basis of the data collected in the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) and to classify them on the basis of a theoretically derived catalogue of criteria. The resulting competence profiles for prospective and current students are analyzed with regard to relevant personal variables (e.g. university type, fields of study, employment, social background, interests, motivation). In addition, the CIB of prospective (upper secondary) students should be predicted by cognitive and motivational personal characteristics as well as characteristics of social origin. A main goal of this project is to determine how many current and prospective students lack sufficient CIB to successfully use digital teaching/learning offers in their further studies and professional life.
