TIMSS in the fourth grade

Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study

Starting in 1995, every four years the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) has been conducting an international student achievement study called Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). This multi-national study assesses mathematics and science skills of students at primary (fourth grade) and post-primary (eighth grade) level. In 2019, Germany (part of the study since 2007) will be again participating in TIMSS 4th grade.

TIMSS in the fourth grade primarily aims to compare elementary school students' achievements in science and mathematics and to describe long-term trends over time. Additional questionnaires for students, parents, teachers, and principals provide information about students’ learning environments and allow student’s achievements to be related to contextual information on a national and international level.

Head of the German project management is Prof. Dr. Knut Schwippert (Department of General, Intercultural and International Comparative Education) at the University of Hamburg. Researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) are in charge of investigating the fourth grade students’ achievements in science (Olaf Köller & Mirjam Steffensky). In addition, Aiso Heinze is an associate member of the national TIMSS consortium.
