IJSO National Final in Bad Homburg

The 39 national finalists of the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) had an exciting week at the Kaiserin-Friedrich Gymnasium Bad Homburg in v. d. Höhe.

Approximately 4,000 students competed in the first round of the competition on the topic of "Listen!" The 39 most successful participants qualified for the national finals of the IJSO in two further rounds of the competition at increasingly demanding levels. The six members of the 2022 national team were nominated after a challenging program of written exams with questions on biology, chemistry and physics, including a laboratory exam that had to be mastered as a team.

"For the first time in IJSO history, the national finals will be held at a partner school of the Nawigator initiative," reported competition director Dr. Felicitas Niekiel at the awards ceremony. "We would therefore like to thank the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Gymnasium very much for the great organization and hospitality." Hesse's Minister of Education and Cultural Affairs Prof. Dr. R. Alexander Lorz also praised the pioneering spirit and success of the emerging talents in a video message and thanked the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Gymnasium for the great cooperation.

Since 2008, the IJSO selection competition has been organized by the IPN - Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, Kiel. In Bad Homburg, the students were supervised by a team from the IPN as well as by former IJSO award winners, who also gave the talented young people exciting insights into their own academic and professional careers.

At the end of an eventful week, the most successful six talents were nominated for the national team at the award ceremony: Clemens Böke from Löhne, Jennifer John from Munich, as well as Oskar Meißner, Karl Schomerus and Michael Valler from Leipzig and Vinzent Schultze from Cottbus will travel to the IPN in Kiel in November to experience science first hand and be celebrated for their success. Unfortunately, participation in the international competition, which should have taken place in Kiev this year, was not possible due to the current political situation. However, the chances of international contacts are by no means lost: the national team has been nominated for the EOES (European Olympiad of Experimental Science) selection seminar, where they will be able to demonstrate their laboratory talent in March 2023 as they compete for the coveted tickets to Riga.

About the IJSO

The International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) is a nationwide competition for schoolchildren that offers interdisciplinary support for young scientists from grade 5. Age limit is 15 years. The national selection process, which is conducted by the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) in Kiel, spans four rounds, the fourth of which takes place in a week-long event at the national level. At the end, the six best participants nationwide make up the German national team. The international competition consists of two theoretical and one practical team test and includes tasks from the fields of biology, chemistry and physics. The national selection process is recommended by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (KMK) and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
