Innovative Archaeology Education in the Classroom

The first Summer School "Archaeology for the School - Beyond Lara Croft and Indiana Jones" took place at the beginning of August in the student research center in Husum. Over two days, teachers from the social and natural sciences subjects in grades 5 to 7 dealt with archaeological questions. A public evening lecture at the Nordfriesland Museum Nissenhaus on August 5th rounded off the program.

During the continuing education event, the teachers were introduced to five different modules that can be easily integrated into the lessons. These cover the fundamental basic human needs of housing, clothing, nutrition and social interaction as well as relationships between people and the environment. The question of how knowledge about the past is created and what relevance this knowledge has for today's life and society also plays a critical role.

The Summer School Archaeology was organized by the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN), the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt, Kiel University (CAU) and the Institute for Quality Development in Schools Schleswig-Holstein (IQSH).
