On Monday, January 28th, 2019, Dr. Ulrike E. Nett from the University of Augsburg will lecture on the topic of emotion and motivation of students.

Abstract:
In empirical educational research, emotions and student motivation are often operationalized as stable personality traits. It is understood, however, that the current emotional and motivational experience of students is influenced by variable characteristics of the situation. Yet, thus far, little systematic research exists regarding the relationship and interaction of stable and variable characteristics of the person and situation with respect to emotions and motivation of learners. The lecture gives an insight into the theoretical and methodological discussion about traits and states in psychological research. The implications of this debate for empirical educational research will also be presented.
Following this, a series of studies in which stable and situational parts in the emotional and motivational experience of learners were systematically separated. The results are used as a basis for discussing the role of stable personality traits and variable teaching traits in the development of emotional and motivational experiences of learners. The advantages of such a systematic separation for empirical educational research will also be discussed.
