Research into Practice - Subject-Specific Competences in Student Teachers

May 10th, 2019

Transfer workshop of the ELMaWi project in Mainz: "Substantial subject-specific learning opportunities are necessary in the school-based practical training of teachers".

During a transfer workshop on May 3rd, 2019 in Mainz, Germany, the results of the ELMaWi project (Assessing Subject-specific Competences in Teacher Education in Mathematics and Economics) were discussed with those responsible for the first and second phases of teacher training.

The ELMaWi project, coordinated by the Department of Mathematics Education at the IPN, is a cooperation project with the University of Mainz and is funded within the framework of the BMBF funding line "Competence Modeling and Instruments of Competence Assessment in the Higher Education Sector". The aim of the project is to investigate the professional competencies of teachers in mathematics and economics.

A special analysis was devoted specifically to examining the extent to which transfer effects occur between the two subjects in specialist and subject education competence areas. The results showed that these only occur to a small extent. Accordingly, it is recommended that substantial subject-specific learning opportunities are necessary in both the subject teaching and the practical school training of teachers.
