Review of the Nano Summer School for Teachers

August 20th, 2018

The first Nano Summer School took place at the Kiel Research Workshop from August 13th – 15th, 2018. For three days the participants jointly examined the topic of nanoscience and their application in chemistry lessons. In experimental workshops, the teachers were familiarized and got to carry out teaching experiments. The practical part of the advanced training was supplemented with lectures by scientists from the research areaKiNSIS at Kiel University.

In addition to these presentations, a former student, Lynn Gottmann, reported about her student research project "SPIONs in cancer research" and her participation in "Jugend forscht". She also spoke of the challenges she had to face along the way.

The use of various media to convey nano-technological content was also vividly presented in the training. The participants were given an insight into the subject of VR glasses, for example. Here, a clean room film and sequences from the doctoral project of KiSOC doctoral student Sara Siebert were used. The Stop-Motion-Box also peaked great interest among teachers. One participant was so impressed that she shot a film about a chemical reaction.

There was always plenty of opportunity for discussions during the breaks and the evening program, as well as during the experimental workshops or when working together on teaching materials. The participants particularly appreciated this: "I really liked that a continual exchange with colleagues was possible," said one teacher. In addition, the teachers especially praised the combination of insights into current research with possible uses and applications at school.

Background:

The Nano Summer School for teachers at the Kiel Research Workshop was a joint event of Kiel University (CAU), the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) and the IQSH. The event was developed in the project Lehramtmit Perspektive at Kiel University (LeaP@CAU), which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of the Federal Government and states as part of the joint "Teacher Education Quality Initiative".
