The German National Team for the IBO 2019 has Been Selected!

The German National Team for the 30th IBO (l.t.r.): Bruno Ederer, Nantje Nageler, Fabian Kutz, Christoph Doktor

Hungary, here we come!

An eventful week for 12 students from nine German states ended on Friday at the IPN in Kiel with the award ceremony and announcement of the German national team for the 30th International Biology Olympiad 2019 in Hungary. Among the almost 1500 participants in the competition, the students had prevailed against strong competition in three selection rounds and qualified for the last federal round of the selection competition for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).

The students had to demonstrate their knowledge of biology in theory and practice in five practical and one large theory session: In addition to seminars and exams in botany, zoology, biochemistry and molecular biology, this year's agenda also included an exam in bioinformatics. Bioinformatics will be a major focus at the 30th International Biology Olympiad in Szeged, Hungary.

The best four German students:

Bruno Ederer (18) from the Carl-Zeiss-Gymnasium in Jena (Thuringia), Christoph Doktor (18) from the Wilhelm-Ostwald-Schule in Leipzig (Saxony), Fabian Kutz (17) from the Carl-Friedrich-Gauss-Gymnasium in Frankfurt (Oder), Brandenburg and Nantje Nageler (16) from the Carl-Zeiss-Gymnasium in Jena (Thuringia). The last two represented biology in the national team at the 17th European Science Olympiad just two weeks ago and won both gold medals in this team competition with their colleagues from chemistry and physics.

These four students now form the national team that will represent Germany at the international competition. The four Olympians will first take part in an intensive preparatory seminar with the Swiss national team in Dresden and then, as part of the International Biology Olympiad, in July. This year's IBO will be held in Szeged, Hungary, from July 14th to July 21st, 2019. Here the students will compete against more than 70 other nations for gold, silver and bronze medals.

This year, special thanks also go to the great support by the Förderverein der BiologieOlympiade and the Biology Lab at the IPN in Kiel.

Each year the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is held in another country. In Germany, the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) in Kiel conducts the selection rounds in cooperation with the Länder Ministries of Education and Cultural Affairs. The selection procedure is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
