The Botanical Garden of Kiel University celebrates its 350th anniversary. On this occasion the nawi-klick!:labor and the life:labor present themselves in the student research center of the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt.

Maria Weisermann and Tobias Plöger from nawi-klick!:labor demonstrate hydrophilic or hydrophobic properties of plant leaves and show how these surface properties can be measured. In addition, they explain why the lotus plant cannot get wet and what advantages it has for the plant.

The program reveals the secret of the so-called "contact angle", created by a surface with a drop of water. In addition, one can learn how certain surfaces can be changed (modified). In just a few steps, an originally water-affine surface can be given highly water-repellent properties. Which plant from the Botanical Garden has a similar water-repellent surface as the lotus leaf?

Dr. Birgit Heyduck and Kirsten Reu look at the leaf from its nanodimensions back to the whole plant in life:labor. They show what the plants of the leaves look like with different surface characteristics and which morphological characteristics are important for plant identification. In addition, they show how the genetic material (DNA) of a strawberry is obtained by simple household means and how morphology and genetics contribute to the creation of a family tree. Younger visitors can take part in a plant memory and a plant world sensory quiz.
