"Virtual Jury Session" in the Federal Environment Competition (BUW)

June 19th, 2020

Close to 350 projects from over 1,200 entrants with interests in the fields of the environment and sustainable development were submitted in the current round of the BUW by the closing date of March 15th, 2020. After an initial assessment of all the projects by the BUW jury, participants from 17 selected projects were invited to discuss their projects with the jurors during this year's jury meeting, which took place June 19th. Due to the corona pandemic and the associated restrictions on contacts, the meeting was held exclusively virtually for the first time in the history of the BUW.

Prior to the jury meeting, the invited BUW participants submitted presentations of their projects using self-made videos which they could then discuss with the jury members in video conferences at set times during the meeting. Following the discussions with the participants in the competition, the jury members of the two BUW categories BUW I and BUW II deliberated on determining the prize categories for this and all other projects. Thus the best BUW projects could also be successfully determined this year and despite the current circumstances. The announcement of the best projects will be made by September 19th, 2020 at the latest.

The annual BUW awards prizes to students and young adults from all over Germany who get to the bottom of the causes of environmental problems with their projects and counteract these problems with creativity and commitment in accordance with the competition motto "From Knowledge to Sustainable Action".

The BUW is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and organized and carried out by the IPN - Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, Kiel. The competition is recommended by the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK).
