On September 14, 2019, the winners of the best projects in the 29th National Environmental Competition (BUW) were honored for their achievements. The award ceremony took place in the Evangelische Akademie in Frankfurt a.M.. Four main prizes were awarded to projects from the federal states of Bavaria (2x) and Baden-Württemberg (2x). The awards ceremony was opened by the Hessian Minister of Culture and current President of the KMK, Prof. Dr. R. Alexander Lorz. The main and special prizes were presented by both Dr. Katrin Knickmeier of the IPN and juror of the BUW I competition jury and Prof. Dr. Gerrit Schüürmann (chairman of the BUW II competition jury and head of the Department of Ecological Chemistry at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig). Sponsors donated and presented further special prizes. Prof. Dr. Estelle Herlyn, head of the Competence Centre for Sustainable Development at the University of Applied Sciences for Economics and Management, gave the keynote speech. A supporting program with a poster fair and a visit to the New Old Town of Frankfurt rounded off the festive event for the winners and their guests.

A total of 405 projects by 1,435 engaged adolescents and young adults between the ages of 10 and 20 were submitted for the 29th BUW session. With this number, the BUW has recorded the highest number of submitted project works and participants in a competition round since 1990. The spectrum of topics in the project works was broad and ranged from scientific research, environmental developments, environmental education measures and campaigns to creative media projects.
The annual competition honors students and young adults from all over Germany whose projects investigate the causes of environmental problems and counter these problems with creativity and commitment in accordance to the competition motto "From knowledge to sustainable action".

The BUW is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and organized and carried out by the IPN - Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, Kiel. The competition is endorsed by the Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK).
Special thanks go to the competition coordinator in the federal states, the BUW jury members and the numerous supporters, whose commitment significantly contributes to the success of the competition.
