October 23rd, 2018

The Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Umeå in Sweden awarded Professor Ilka Parchmann, Director at the IPN and Vice-President of Kiel University, an honorary doctorate this year.

The University of Umeå is honoring Ilka Parchmann's commitment to the educational science of chemistry and to its international networking. She was a visiting professor at the Department of Science and Mathematics Education at Umeå University from 2011 to 2015. Between 2014 and 2018, the chemistry researcher and her research team at the IPN carried out a research project at the Swedish University funded by the Swedish Research Council. The aim of the project was to compare teaching and structural differences between the two school systems. The project investigated the cognitive, metacognitive and motivational development of pupils in grades 5 to 11 in both countries. Ilka Parchmann also initiated the BildungsHanse, a project between Nordic universities. This joint project helps to develop an understanding of the similarities and differences between different education systems and of the training of teachers in different countries.

The laudation at the ceremony also praised Professor Parchmann for her outstanding contribution not only to the Department of Science and Mathematics Education, but also to the Faculty of Science and Technology and Umeå College of Education.

Ilka Parchmann was born in Wilhelmshaven in 1969. After graduating in Chemistry and Biology in 1993, she completed her doctoral thesis in the field of Chemistry Education at the University of Oldenburg in 1997. She was appointed Director of the Department of Chemistry Education at the IPN and Deputy Executive Scientific Director in 2009. She is professor of chemistry education at Kiel University. In 2014 she was appointed Vice President of the Kiel University.

Ilka Parchmann accepted the prestigious honorary doctorate from Umeå University at a festive ceremony in Sweden last week.
