Leadership structures in educational institutions: Education Council presents assessment

April 21st, 2021

In its new report, Leadership, Management, Governance: Responsibility in the Education System, the Education Council initiated by the vbw - Vereinigung der Bayerischen Wirtschaft e.V. (Bavarian Business Association) addresses the question of what influence the management structures in educational institutions have on the quality of the education offered. Based on the chain of effects - from the management to the teaching staff to the participants in the educational offerings - it explores the question of which leadership styles best correspond to the goals and structures of the individual educational phases and which measures are to be taken to make leadership effective. As a central element, the Education Council names general as well as education-phase-specific recommendations for action and addresses these to political decision-makers.

The Education Council (Aktionsrat Bildung) is an expert committee of renowned educational researchers that has been constituted since 2005 on the initiative of the Bavarian Business Association (vbw - Vereinigung der Bayerischen Wirtschaft e.V.). Prof. Dr. Olaf Köller, Executive Scientific Director of the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, is a member of the Education Council and co-author of the report.

The common interest of the Education Council is to evaluate the current situation in the German education system on the basis of comprehensive expert reports. The experts aim to evaluate current political decisions in light of empirical findings and provide policymakers with concrete recommendations. In its report this year, the Education Action Council examines educational leadership structures in the education system.
