Positive outcome: online continuing education for teachers on nanotechnology

Initially conceived as a digital alternative solution in times when classroom events are hardly feasible due to the Covid pandemic, the online continuing education for teachers "Nanotechnology for the classroom", a collaboration between the research focus KiNSIS and the project "Quality Offensive Teacher Education" of Kiel University, the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt, the Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (IPN) and the Institute for Quality Development at Schools Schleswig-Holstein (IQSH), turned out to be a successful and widely used model. In the winter semester 2020/21, scientists used several lectures and experiments to provide insights into current research topics - and also gained some knowledge themselves. The topic of "nanotechnology" was highly relevant to applications and provided many links to chemistry lessons.

"When it became clear that the Nano Summer School, which we have been offering for three years, would not be taking place in 2020, we were initially very disappointed. But the digital event series that we organized instead in the winter semester was a complete success and may even become an additional format for us in the long run," was the positive assessment of Professor Ilka Parchmann, head of the Department of Chemistry Education at the IPN, who also moderated the event. Normally, the multi-day continuing education course takes place during the summer vacations in the facilities of the Kieler Forschungswerkstatt. The aim is to support teachers in the implementation of nanotechnology contents in the classroom.

This time, the virtual seminar room was also attended by participants from outside Schleswig-Holstein, including Lower Saxony, Berlin, NRW and Bavaria. "One teacher even joined us from Switzerland," said a delighted organizer Dr. Silke Rönnebeck, IPN. "We look forward to welcoming the teachers in person again. But if Corona continues to make it difficult this year, we now know that digital events also work very well and have their own unique advantages," Rönnebeck said.
