Who goes to the museum? An interview with Gun-Brit Thoma and Lorenz Kampschulte about their visitor research in the Leibniz research museums.

March 3rd, 2023

Many museums aim to promote participation and social exchange. Visitor research is indispensable to better answer the question of how successful this is. Gun-Brit Thoma, a member of the IPN Department of Educational Science and Psychology, and Lorenz Kampschulte, Head of the Education Department at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, talked about an empirical study in this area in an interview with the online portal wissenschaftskommunikation.de.

In this interview, the two researchers provide insights into an empirical visitor structure analysis conducted in the eight research museums of the Leibniz Association and aimed to better understand why people visit or do not visit a museum by comparing eight large museums in Germany. To find out how they went about it and whether the Leibniz museums are reaching their stated goal of being museums for everyone, you can read the interview (in German) here.
